Majlinda Bregu on the occasion of Workers' Day: Not for the communist May

Sarajevo - For workers in the Western Balkans and all over the world, May 1st is, above all, a moment of reflection on the ongoing struggles to improve working conditions, brain drain, long-term unemployment and undeclared work.

"Employment rates in the Western Balkans have reached a record high of 60.5% in 2023, and while this figure inspires optimism, one must be careful about the reasons behind it," RCC Secretary General Majlinda Bregu said at the opening. of the video on the occasion of May 1, Workers' Day.

Gender disparities persist in the workforce, with women lagging behind men by 15%. Challenges such as long-term unemployment, undeclared work, alongside worrying trends of emigration and brain drain, continue to prevail.

"One fifth of the population of the Western Balkans lives abroad, while according to the latest edition of the Balkan Barometer of the RCC, 71% of our young people think of leaving their home and going abroad", added Bregu.

There are many reasons for the rapid departure of citizens from the region: from lower living standards compared to those in the destination countries, to weak social protection and high levels of corruption.

According to the Balkan Barometer, policies aimed at retaining the region's workforce have increased popularity among Western Balkan businesses with record support of 70%, an increase of 24 points since 2021.

However, even though 40% of local businesses would prefer more workers from the Western Balkans, they turn to third countries, importing skilled workers to fill their vacancies, and the quota for granting work permits is every year. the highest in the economies of the region.

Based on these disturbing realities, the question arises: How can we achieve that next year on Labor Day there will be more people working in the region than outside the borders?/ CNA
