Today, the renowned clarinetist and singer from Korçë, Zhani Struga, celebrates his 63rd birthday, one of the most representative figures of Albanian folk music from the southeast of the country.
An artist who has given voice to the folk spirit for decades, transforming the clarinet into a means of emotional and identity narrative. Born and raised in Korça, a city with a rich musical and cultural tradition, Zhani Struga was formed early on among the sounds of folk music, serenades and the characteristic harmony of this region. It is precisely this atmosphere that influenced the construction of his artistic style, where the clarinet is not simply an accompanying instrument, but the protagonist of the interpretation.
He took his first steps on stage at a young age, while his talent and passion for music quickly led him to the most important folklore scenes in the country. A key moment in the beginning of his career was his participation in the National Folklore Festival in Gjirokastër, where he was praised for his virtuoso interpretation on the clarinet and for the artistic sensitivity he brought to the stage. Since then, Zhani Struga has built a successful career, participating in dozens of festivals, concerts and cultural events, both in Albania and abroad. He has been part of many musical formations and folk ensembles, contributing to the preservation and promotion of traditional Albanian music.
During his artistic journey, Struga has collaborated with well-known names in Albanian folk music, accompanying prominent voices and participating in musical recordings that are today considered part of our cultural heritage. His clarinet has accompanied moments of joy, family celebrations, major concerts and institutional activities, becoming a sound known and loved by the public. One of the highlights of his career remains the recital concert “Spirit in the Clarinet”, held at the “Andon Zako Çajupi” Theater in Korça. This concert was considered a rich artistic retrospective, where Struga brought to the public the most representative interpretations of his career, testifying to the strong emotional connection between the artist and his city.
In more than 35 years of artistic activity, Zhani Struga has been appreciated not only as a virtuoso instrumentalist, but also as an artist who has remained faithful to tradition, preserving authentic folk music and passing it on from generation to generation. For many young people, he remains a point of reference and an example of dedication to art. On his 63rd birthday, Zhani Struga is honored as one of those artists who, with their tireless work, have contributed to the enrichment of Albanian cultural identity, keeping the spirit of folk music alive and passing it on with dignity through time. /CNA
