Italians support Pogradec farmers with European equipment and expertise

An important initiative was presented in Pogradec to preserve the rare grape variety “Serina e Bardhë”, a treasure of the area that was in danger of disappearing. The farmers of Grabovica have now joined together in an agricultural society, creating new opportunities for production and economic development.

Ersol Caco, wine producer, says that this merger is the right step to increase production and preserve indigenous varieties.

"The main goal is to identify typical local products. In the viticulture of the area, there are Albanian varieties at risk of loss, such as Serina e Bardhë, Gems and Muskat Kanellë. We as farmers have legally joined together to invest in new vineyards and to have a different way of taxation. Currently, we are 7 farmers and we aim to include all those involved in viticulture," said Caco.

At the ceremony held in Grabovica, modern agricultural machinery was also delivered to the Pogradec incubator, creating better working conditions, increased production and concrete support for farmers in the area.

The Mayor of Pogradec, Ilir Xhakoli, praised the union of farmers as a step that brings real benefits.

"Finally, it was understood that by being together, the benefits are greater. The union brings convenience, both for taxes and for access to support schemes. This is the first swallow that will bring other cooperatives to the villages of Pogradec. Both seeds and pesticides are obtained cheaper and of better quality when you work together ," said Xhakoli.

Paolo Viviani, representative of the Italian side, emphasized the potential of traditional Albanian products in the European market.

"Traditional products play an important role in promoting the activities of Albanian farmers. We have identified products that are closely related to their areas and they have a secure place in the national market. When they reach a special value or sufficient quantity, the opportunity of the international market opens up. With Albania's progress towards the EU, the European market is an excellent opportunity for these products ," said Viviani.

Through this initiative, Pogradec farmers will work together, benefit from technology, training and new production standards, strengthening the value of local products and their rural identity. /CNA
