Historian Naim Flamuri has spoken about the origin of the world-famous footballer Lionel Messi, saying that he is of Arbëresh origin and according to him this is proven by documents.

During a direct link on the show "Good Morning Albanians" in Euronea, Flamuri said that many Albanian families have emigrated from Italy to Argentina, one of them being Messi's family, emphasizing that his family was originally from Gjirokastra, with the last name Mexico.
