Diplomacy, politics and justice in focus/ Developments of the last week of May

The last week of May, which extends from May 25 to 31, begins with a high intensity of developments, with the focus on the official visit that the Minister of Defense of Greece, Nikos Dendias, is holding this Monday in Tirana.

During the day, Dendias holds important meetings, starting with the Ministry of Defense where he meets with his counterpart, Ermal Nufi. The agenda continues with an official meeting and working lunch that he holds with Prime Minister Edi Rama, while in the afternoon the Greek minister is received by the Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania, His Beatitude, Joan.

Also on May 26, the Albania-EU Intergovernmental Conference will be held in Brussels, which, according to the government, successfully seals the introductory phase and opens the final phase of the European Union membership negotiations.

On the opposition front, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, continues meetings with the Democrats, following his reconfirmation as leader of this political force in the referendum held on Saturday, May 23.

Subsequently, the Democratic Party has scheduled the convocation of the National Assembly for May 30, at 11:00 a.m. Berisha, who has declared that the next protest will be the most powerful peaceful uprising the country has ever known, has initially focused on concluding internal processes.

These processes are expected to be concluded within this month, paving the way for the intensification of opposition action and protests in June.

In parallel with political developments, parliamentary life remains busy. The Committee on Europe and Foreign Affairs meets this Monday to hold hearings with candidates for heads of diplomatic missions, where the proposed officials to represent Albania in Geneva, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Libya, Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan and Bosnia and Herzegovina will be heard.

Meanwhile, on May 28, the Special Parliamentary Committee for Administrative-Territorial Reform will hold its next hearings with the mayors of the municipalities of Berat, Fier and Shkodra regions.

The justice system remains at the center of the week's developments. On May 26, the GJKKO will hold a hearing against Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj and his co-defendants, led by a panel of judges composed of Elsa Ulliri, Flora Hajredini and Besmir Stroka. Two days later, on May 28, the mayor will face the Supreme Court regarding the request to revoke the security measure.

Also, the trial for the "Meta" file continues at the GJKKO, where after the case was divided for some defendants, the usual trial continues for Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi. At the same time, the trial for the "Partizani" file against Sali Berisha, who also periodically appears at SPAK in implementation of the "compulsory appearance" security measure, continues./ CNA
