"Laws do not make education qualitative".

This is the opinion of the education expert, Ndriçim Mehmeti.

In an interview for CNA TV, Mehmeti has raised several problems according to him, one of them being the lack of addressing and supporting students to study in branches that would serve Albania in the future.

According to him, Albania has become the Republic of Nursing.

"We have a very large disproportion with the needs of our economy and different sectors compared to what we produce. We produce about 4 thousand nurses. Is there any study, that we need 4 thousand nurses. First, we must start making a national education pact that goes until 2050 and not 2030, in which no one can interfere tomorrow, with specialists, with people who know about this work. Starting with studying how many teachers we need and how to attract students to teaching. We need a package of measures. It is said that the teacher's salary increased, but is this enough? Our problem today is that we lack teachers. We have become a republic of nursing", he said.

Mehmeti also commented on the proposed draft law on scientific research, which he said contradicts the current law on education.

"This law contradicts the current law on education. It talks about academic career and scientific research. There they talk about academic careers and scientific research, here they don't talk at all. How will we get it? With the new law or with the existing one? Secondly. Talk about scientific research. Before we had the draft, most of which were from the rectors' conference. But how can you remove the rectors? I don't care about names. We will line up 7 ministers who do not understand, this is not the national labor council. It is a step backwards that takes away what little autonomy the universities had. Instead of having the basic unit, the rector and the dean, now it has the minister and the prime minister. Where in the world does this happen?

Make a law for scientific research, now we have another law. The quality of education is not determined by laws and VKM. It is done with funding, with support, with patriotism, passion, to make education a national priority", emphasized the education expert./ CNA
