An article published in the prestigious media outlet 'The Times' has described southern Albania as a secret and picturesque side of the country for tourism. British journalist Laura Sanders describes a tour she conducted in some of the most touristic areas of the south, which stand out for their historical, archaeological and cultural features.

'The Times' writes about Gjirokastra, Pogradec and Cyprus.

Arriving in Gjirokastra is described as enchanting.

“We arrived in Gjirokastra and were immediately enchanted. Our accommodation was a characteristic hotel inside an Ottoman house with furniture to match. Nowadays, most people know Gjirokastra for its traditional old town and bazaar, which resembles Bosnia’s Mostar or northern Albania’s Kruja. But the city was also the birthplace of Enver Hoxha, the brutal communist dictator who ruled Albania for 40 years until his death in 1985. It is a wonder how such an evil man could come from such a beautiful and peaceful country,” writes ‘The Times’.

Pogradec is described as a tourist city that has found the right balance with tourism, noisy but not too crowded.

"We stopped in the large town of Pogradec, which has a real British seaside feel: children laughed at fairground games, the smell of caramels and pancakes wafted through the air and old men smoked cigarettes and drank brandy while playing checkers on the promenade. Pogradec is a tourist town that has found the right balance with tourism - noisy, but not too crowded," writes 'The Times'.

For Cypriots, the calmness and originality of the service are emphasized.

“One of the quietest coastal villages in the Vlora region, in the dark after a three-hour drive from Tirana. I woke up to a view of Old Qeparo, the original farming village on the hillside, descending from the mountain to meet New Qeparo on the coast, where beach bars and boat rental centers were preparing for the season. The first of many holiday parties began on the veranda overlooking it all,” writes journalist Sanders./CNA
