20 years since January 9, 2004, the tragedy with 21 victims and 7 missing

Today marks 20 years since the tragedy of January 9, 2004, in the bay of Vlora, where a raft illegally transporting some Albanians to Italy capsized.

The balance of victims was very heavy. 21 people were officially confirmed to have drowned and 7 others are still missing, as their bodies were never found.

The confirmed victims were found on the morning of January 10 by an Italian army NATO helicopter.

They were mostly young people from the Shkodër District, aged between 15 and 33 years old.

Eleven others were able to escape, among them the boatmen.

The Albanians paid 1,500 euros to the boatmen in the hope that the other coast would improve their lives, but the voyage to the neighboring country was tragic.

The tragedy has not been fully resolved.

Only after 13 years was the extradition to Albania of one of the skiers, Elton Tafili, sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Vlora court for human trafficking with the purpose of clandestine immigration.

The association of family members of the victims of this tragedy made a report to SPAK a few years ago, but this structure refused to consider it and returned it to the Court of Vlora.

They demand the disclosure of the incident and the holding of responsibility of the former officials of the Police of Vlora and the Ministry of the Interior./ CNA
