Japan launches HII-A rocket that will explore the origins of the universe

Japan on Thursday launched a rocket carrying a small spacecraft capable of landing on the moon's surface and an X-ray telescope.

The rocket aims to explore the origins of the universe.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, known as JAXA, broadcast the launch of the HII-A rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan.

The rocket will put into Earth orbit a satellite called the X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission, or XRISM, which will measure the speed and composition of what lies between galaxies.

Also aboard the rocket is the Innovative Lunar Exploration Rover, a small spacecraft capable of landing on the surface of the moon, which is likely to attempt a landing early next year.

The move comes at a time when the world is once again turning to the challenge of going to the moon. Only four countries have successfully landed on the moon, USA, Russia, China and India./ REL
