Italian volleyball and the world sports community have been in a state of shock for several hours after the tragic news of the death of 18-year-old Julia Ituma, who played for Novara and was considered one of the young stars of women's volleyball.

Ituma was in Istanbul with her team for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Exatsimbasi.

The Turkish team won 3-0 and booked their ticket to the final with Ituma coming on as a substitute in all three sets with 2 points and returning to the hotel with the rest of the team.

No one could have imagined what would happen after at 05:00 in the morning hotel employees discovered her lifeless body in the courtyard, with the 18-year-old fallen from the window of the 5th floor where her room was.

Turkish media, citing police sources, spoke of the suicide of the young athlete, who was seen on the hotel's security cameras talking on her phone in the corridor outside the room around 01:00. However, investigations are ongoing and so far there has been no official announcement from the authorities.

Ituma was born on October 4, 2004 in Milan to Nigerian parents and her involvement in volleyball came after she first tried her luck in basketball, but in high school she was spotted by a regional coach of the Italian Federation who recommended her to official teams.
