Historic decision in Spain, fans are sentenced to prison

Three Valencia fans have been sentenced to prison in Spain for racist chants. The incident took place on May 21 last year, when Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior was insulted throughout.

Valencia fans in the "Mestalla" stadium did not hold back, insulting the Brazilian footballer for his color.

The Spanish authorities sentenced the three fans, found guilty, to eight months in prison for racist calls to the opposing player.

This is a historic decision from Spain, as it becomes the first prison sentence for racism in a football match.

In addition to the prison sentence, three fans were banned from entering the stadiums for a period of 2 years.

The accused were initially sentenced to 12 months in prison, but it was later reduced to 8 months. Real Madrid, in the official communique, considered this decision to be excellent news.

The three fans have accepted their criminal responsibility and have made public a letter in which they apologize to the player Vinicius Junior, Real Madrid and the rest of the people who felt denigrated and offended by their behavior. In addition to expressing their regret, the three accused ask fans in their letter to remove all traces of racism and intolerance in football matches and not only.

The decision was also hailed by La Liga president Javier Tebas, who said it is great news in the fight against racism in Spain and sends a clear message to fans who go to stadiums for violence. According to him, La Liga will identify racists and report them, for whom there will be consequences.
