Luiza Gega ends the European Championship in fifth place

Luiza Gega finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase race at the European Athletics Championships.

The Albanian athlete came to this final with the title of the current champion. Gega kept the pace of the leader for more than half of the race, but in the end he could not secure the medal zone.

The Albanian ranked fifth, handing over the champion's crown, which she had held for two years.

As for the final, in the Olympic stadium of Rome, the Frenchwoman Alice Finot arrived first at the finish line. She was initially disqualified, for a foul, but after an appeal, she was restored to first place and the gold medal.

In second place was Germany's Gesa Grauz, who received the silver medal, while the bronze medal went to the British Elizabeth Bird.

After the fifth place in the European, Luiza Gega now shifts her attention to the Olympic Games, 'Paris 2024', the biggest sports event, which will be held from July 26 to August 11 in the French capital, where the 35-year-old Albanian goes qualified with rate.

At the European Athletics Championship being held in Rome, Izmir Smajlaj also competed for Albania in the long jump discipline. The athlete from Shkodran, who was returning to prestigious events after a serious injury, could not pass the qualifiers. Smajlaj recorded a season best, jumping 7.78 meters in the qualifiers, but that was not enough to advance to the final stage.
