Fraudulent matches / Criminal betting network destroyed in Spain, 21 footballers in handcuffs

The operation against an organization suspected of engaging in match-fixing of the Spanish Football Federation and Gibraltar National League to take advantage of sports betting has resulted in 21 arrests.

As the Spanish national police announced on Wednesday, the arrested, to whom were added six other investigators, among whom are players of the second and third RFEF, could have embezzled more than 500 thousand euros.

Following this joint operation with Interpol and Europol, the Spanish police consider this organization dismantled, with branches in Cádiz, Badajoz, Seville and Almeria, whose members are accused of membership in a criminal organization, corruption among individuals in the field of sports and deception against the operators of this game.

The organization consisted of two "leaders", two men connected to the world of professional football. The group was discovered in May 2021 due to misconduct in the betting market at a third tier football match, but its existence precedes that date. Network executives set up coded communication groups with the players themselves to manage sports arrangements and get big winnings from their bets.

The network had associates who contributed with their identity to operate the online game, in exchange for a hundred euros and with people going to different rooms to place predetermined bets and collect the prizes received. During the operation, three house searches were carried out, where 60 thousand euros in cash were seized, as well as two vehicles.
