Football scandal in China/ 73 people banned for life, 9 teams lose points

China has punished 73 individuals with life bans from football as part of an anti-corruption campaign over match-fixing and illegal activities in the sport.

Among those expelled are former Chinese national team coach Li Tie and former Chinese Football Association president Chen Xuyuan.

Authorities also imposed points deductions and financial penalties on nine Chinese Super League clubs, including Shanghai Shenhua and Tianjin Jinmen Tigers, who lost 10 points and were fined 1 million yuan each. Shanghai Port, the current champion, will start the 2026 season with a five-point deduction.

According to the Chinese Football Association, these measures aim to strengthen discipline, clean up the sporting environment and maintain fair competition, while the authorities express a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. /CNA
