Innovation in the World Cup, from the number of teams to the venues

The 2026 World Cup will mark a new chapter in the history of football, not only for the record number of participating teams, but also for the fact that it will take place in three host countries: USA, Mexico and Canada. The new format and split organization bring some interesting changes and challenges.

This is the first World Cup for Canada as host, while Mexico becomes the first country to host a World Cup for the third time (1970, 1986, 2026). For the USA, it is the second time after 1994.

The number of teams will increase to 48, from the previous 32. A total of 104 matches will be played, including an additional 32-team knockout round. There will be 12 groups with 4 teams each.

The first two teams from each group and the best 8 third-placed teams advance to the elimination stage.

Host countries USA, Mexico and Canada have automatically qualified, while the other 45 teams will be determined by qualifying tournaments:

The increase to 48 teams aims to include more nationals from under-represented regions, allowing new countries to participate.

Selection for 12 groups of four teams aims to preserve sporting integrity and excitement until the end of the group stage.

This tournament is expected to be the largest and most attended in the history of the World Cup, setting new standards for the future of this global event.
