USA-Iran clashes jeopardize national team's participation in World Cup

On March 25, Iran secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup, becoming the sixth national team to qualify for the tournament. This is Iran's fourth consecutive appearance and seventh overall in the competition.

However, geopolitical tensions and a lack of diplomatic relations with the US, the tournament's host country, have raised doubts about the team's participation. FIFA faces an unprecedented challenge in guaranteeing the participation of a country under attack from one of the organizers.

Precedents with exceptions are not excluded, as in the case of Russia and Yugoslavia.

It remains unclear whether Iran will be allowed to participate in the tournament. Meanwhile, entry into the U.S. for Iranian players, staff and fans could be complicated by a new presidential order restricting visas for citizens of several countries, including Iran.
