It hasn't happened since 1980, what a disappointment for Serie A in the World Cup

The 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina brought an unusual statistic for Italian football.

For the first time since the borders reopened to foreign players in 1980, no Serie A footballer took to the field in the World Cup final.

Lautaro Martinez, an Inter player, remained on the bench for the entire 120 minutes of the match, while Nico Gonzalez, although linked with Juventus, played the tournament with Atletico Madrid.

In previous finals, Serie A has always had important representatives, from Diego Maradona, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Andreas Brehme, to Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Wesley Sneijder and Angel Di Maria.

Five players from the Italian championship took part in the 2018 final, while Angel Di Maria, Theo Hernandez, Adrien Rabiot and Olivier Giroud will be present in Qatar 2022. Serie A has also been present through referees, with Pierluigi Collina in the 2002 final and Nicola Rizzoli in the 2014 one.

The 2026 World Cup final thus broke a tradition that had lasted for more than four decades.
