From 64 games they go to 104! FIFA has ready for approval the plan for the World Cup with 48 teams

The World Cup will no longer be like what we are used to seeing until now. From 2026, the tournament will expand to 48 teams and it has already been learned how the group stage of the tournament will be, with a significant increase in its duration and the number of matches that will be played.

FIFA had initially planned to play groups with three participating teams. But seeing that the rivalry of the last matches could disappear, it has returned to the existing system by transforming the stage into groups with 4 teams in each of the 12 groups. According to "The Athletic", the plan that will soon be approved by the FIFA Council is the latter, bringing the number of tournament matches to 104, from the 64 that were in the last edition that took place in Qatar.

The knockout stage would see 32 teams participating, as the top two from each group, as well as the top 8 third-placed teams, would advance to the next stage.

The tournament, which in 2026 will take place in the USA, Canada and Mexico, will have a very long time span, as it is predicted to last 39 days, as never before in history.
