Goals scored/ Ronaldo surpasses Messi, but the former Guatemalan striker holds

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to make history in world football. The Portugal forward was the absolute protagonist in his national team's 5-0 victory over Armenia in a match valid for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. At the age of 40, Ronaldo showed once again that he remains decisive, scoring two goals for his team.

With these two goals, Ronaldo has reached the quota of 38 goals in World Cup qualifying matches, in just 48 appearances. This result has moved him into second place in the all-time ranking of goal scorers in the qualifiers, surpassing Lionel Messi, who has scored 36 goals in 72 matches of this format.

At the top of the all-time list is Guatemalan Carlos Ruiz, a surprise name for many. The former striker, who has now retired from football and is 45 years old, has scored 39 goals in just 47 World Cup qualifying matches.

Ruiz is a well-known figure in Central American football, but also in several other championships. Although his career is not comparable to Ronaldo in terms of titles and fame, Ruiz has remained in history thanks to his figures in World Cup qualifiers.
