Heavy for the Netherlands, five players contract the virus and leave the squad

Five players of the Dutch national team have left the group and returned home just one day before the first qualifying match of "EURO 2024" against France.

Cody Gakpo, Matthijs de Ligt, Sven Botman, Joey Veerman and Bart Verbruggen have been infected with a virus that is not known exactly, but it is clear that it is not COVID.

The "tulips" coach, Ronald Koeman, immediately called three substitutes: Ryan Gravenberch (Bayern Munich), Kjell Scherpen (Vitesse) and Stefan de Vrij (Internazionale).

Gravenberch and Scherpen were in a training camp in Spain with the Netherlands youth group, De Vrij will be the 23rd player in the selection. After the match against France, the list will be reviewed again.

Earlier this week, Frenkie de Jong and Steven Bergwijn left with injuries. Veerman was then called up as a substitute along with Donyell Malen.
