Debts are 'suffocating' Belgian football, 250 million euro loss in five years...

2022-10-22 10:27:02, Sport CNA

While the Belgian top-flight clubs have amassed a debt of €250m in five years, Anderlecht alone has a €97m balance sheet at the end of the 2020-2021 season, according to a survey published on Friday by The Echo newspaper. . According to the economic daily, "together, the 18 elite Belgian football clubs suffered, during the 2020-2021 season alone, a record net loss of 120.5 million euros".

This deficit is mainly explained by the Covid crisis: the suspension of competitions has caused clubs to lose more than a quarter of their turnover, in terms of tickets, sponsors and player transfers, compared to last season. That was enough to make the newspaper write that "Jupiler Pro League is a money pit. Clubs spend, season after season, negative operational results".

Only four clubs show positive results: RC Genk (with a positive balance of 49.6 million euros over five years), Club Brugge (33.1 million), La Gantoise (18.8 million) and Charleroi (14.6 million). The balances of others have deficits.
