England official the new coach

Lee Carsley has been named interim England manager as the search for Gareth Southgate's successor continues.

The 50-year-old has stepped down from his role as England Under-21 coach to replace Southgate, who resigned two days after losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final last month.

"As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to lead the team while the FA continue the process to find a new manager," said Carsley.

"My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion to the UEFA Nations League," he added, the BBC reports.

Carsley will now manage England in September's games against the Republic of Ireland and Finland, the FA said, with the view that he will remain in the position "while the recruitment process for a new permanent manager continues".
