WHO report: Europe's dependence on foreign doctors and nurses is growing

Europe's dependence on foreign doctors and nurses is growing and could create challenges for health systems in the coming years, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned in a new report.

The WHO European Region, which covers 53 countries in Europe and Central Asia, is projected to face a shortage of 950,000 health workers by 2030 and has turned to immigration to bridge this gap.

Between 2014 and 2023, the number of new doctors in the European workforce almost tripled, while the number of nurses increased fivefold, according to the report.

During this time, the number of doctors trained abroad increased by 58 percent and the number of nurses trained abroad increased by 67 percent. Germany and the United Kingdom accounted for most of this increase.

By 2023, 60 percent of new doctors and 72 percent of new nurses entering the European labor market were trained abroad. This includes healthcare workers from neighboring European countries, as well as those from Asia, Africa or the Americas./CNA
