The natural increase of our country is entirely dependent on the number of women of reproductive age, but they are rapidly declining.

The data of Cens 2023 show that in 2023 there were 508 thousand women of reproductive age (15-49 years old) in the whole country from over 710 thousand who were in the 2011 census. Their number between the two censuses has decreased by over 28 %, or more than twice the total population (14%).

In the young age group, with the greatest potential to bear children, the decline was over 40 percent.

The biggest decrease is among women aged 15-19, who have decreased in number more than in 2011.

In 2023, there were only 72,000 women aged 15-19, a 45% decrease from the 2011 census, where there were over 132,000 women in this age group.

The decline of women in the reproductive age will affect the low birth rate in the years to come and the irreversible reduction of the population.

Women in the 25-29 age group decreased by 21%.

The lowest decrease was only -6% for women in the age group of 30-34 years, while the reduction of over 30% is also present in the age groups of 40-44 and 44-49 years.

In addition to shrinking, women of reproductive age are giving birth to fewer children.

In 1950, when the regime of the communist dictatorship was established, 47,291 babies were born, according to data from the INSTAT archives, while the number of women of reproductive age (15-49 years) was only 259,472.

In 2023, only 22,210 babies were born across the country, the lowest level since 1934 when official annual data were reported, but meanwhile the number of women of reproductive age is over 500,000.

It is understandable that since the 50s-60s, Albania, like Europe, has evolved in terms of family planning, gender equality, the integration of women in the labor market, but in our country there is still a greater percentage of women who give birth to fewer children than they want.

Demographers and sociologists are concerned that births in Albania have fallen beyond all predictions./ Monitor magazine
