Europe, the fastest warming continent in the world

Europe should prepare for more deadly heat waves fueled by climate change, a report published on Monday said.

According to the findings - of the report compiled by the World Meteorological Organization and the European Climate Service - this continent was 2.3 degrees Celsius hotter last year, compared to the pre-industrial era.

Drought, record sea surface temperatures and unprecedented melting of glaciers are among the consequences the world is facing as a result of global warming.

Europe, which has warmed twice as much as the global average since 1980, recorded record temperatures last year.

France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom recorded the hottest summer on record last year.

The report said poor countries, which have done little to combat temperature-raising carbon emissions, will be worst hit.

According to the report, extreme heat left more than 16,000 people dead last year, while floods and storms caused damages worth $2 billion./ REL
