Population drama, births fell by 12.7% in the first 6 months of 2022

Albania's population is falling dramatically due to the rapid decline in births.

Today's INSTAT data show that the number of babies born in the first 6 months was 12.7% lower in number than in the same period a year ago. In the first 6 months of 2023, there were 10,283 births from 11,781 in the first 6 months of 2022.

However, the natural increase was positive, as deaths were lower than in the first 6 months.

INSTAT reported that the natural population increase for the second quarter of 2023 is positive, registering 465 more births than deaths.

The number of births for the second quarter of 2023 is 5,119, marking a decrease of 8.2%, compared to the second quarter of 2022.

The number of deaths for the second quarter of 2023 is 4,654, marking a decrease of 8.1%, compared to the second quarter of 2022

In the second quarter of 2023, five regions of the country register a positive natural population increase, while in the other seven regions, the natural population increase is negative.

In the second quarter of 2023, the county with the highest natural increase is Tirana, with 699 more births than deaths, while the county with the lowest natural increase is Korça, with 184 more deaths than births.

Births in rapid decline

In the second quarter of 2023, one region of the country recorded an increase in the number of births, while eleven other regions recorded a decrease, compared to the second quarter of 2022.

The district with the highest number of births is Tirana with 1,846 births, while the district with the lowest number is Gjirokastra with 84 births.

The largest increase in the percentage of births, during the second quarter of 2023, compared to the second quarter of 2022, is the region of Vlora with 2.4%, while the largest decrease is the region of Berat with 19.2%.

Deaths are contained as the pandemic passes

In the second quarter of 2023, 11 regions of the country recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, while one region recorded an increase, compared to the second quarter of 2022.

The district with the lowest number of deaths is Kukësi with 97 deaths, while the district with the highest number is Tirana with 1,147 deaths.

The largest decrease in the percentage of deaths during the second quarter of 2023, compared to the same period of 2022, is occupied by the county of Durrës with a decrease of 17.6%./Revista Monitor
