European scientists: July, the hottest month ever

The European organization that monitors the climate has made the finding official: July 2023 was the hottest month on Earth ever recorded.

The world's average July temperature of 16.95 degrees Celsius, but this year was a third of a degree higher than the previous record set in 2019, said the Climate Change Service, a branch of the European Union's space programme. Global temperature records are usually broken by hundredths or tenths of a degree, so the current difference is unusual.

"These records have serious consequences for people and the planet that are increasingly exposed to extreme and intense events," said director of this service, Samantha Burgess.

Deadly heat waves have hit the southwestern United States, Mexico, Europe and Asia. Some studies have blamed human-caused climate change, such as burning coal, using oil and natural gas.

Days during July were the hottest on record. Temperatures were so high that the EU Service and the World Meteorological Organization made an early announcement that July was expected to be the hottest on record before the month was over. The August 8 announcement only confirmed these findings.

July this year was 1.5 degrees Celsius hotter than in pre-industrial times. In 2015, the world's nations agreed to prevent long-term warming that is 1.5 degrees hotter than in the pre-industrial era.

July this year was 0.7 degrees Celsius warmer than the average recorded for this month in the period 1991-2020, the EU Service said.

The world's oceans, meanwhile, are half a degree warmer than in the previous 30 years, and the temperature in the North Atlantic was 1.05 degrees warmer than average.

Meanwhile, the Antarctic recorded the lowest level of ice this year, 15 percent less than the average it usually records at this time of the year./ REL
