Transplanted with a pig's heart/ The 58-year-old died after 6 weeks

Lawrence Faucette, is the 58-year-old who did the genetically modified pig heart transplant about six weeks ago.

Officials at the University of Maryland Medical Center confirmed that the 58-year-old died Monday of signs of rejection.

Dr. Bartley Griffith, who performed the experimental operation, discovered Lawrence Faucette's last wish.

"Faucette's last wish was that we make the most of what we have learned from experience, that others may be given a chance at a new heart when a human organ cannot be found. Afterwards, he told the team of doctors and nurses gathered around him that he loved us. We will miss him terribly", said the doctor.

The 58-year-old was admitted to the medical center on September 14 after symptoms of heart failure and underwent the transplant 6 days later.

His heart disease and health problems did not qualify him for a heart transplant. But unfortunately his body rejected the genetically modified pig's heart and he died as a result.

Faucette was the second man to perform such an intervention. The first patient, 57-year-old David Bennett, died last year, two months after his transplant. He had developed numerous complications and traces of a virus that infects pigs were found in his new heart.

Both patients had terminal heart disease when they received the transplanted organs, and neither recovered well enough to leave the hospital.

Doctors said Bennett showed no signs of acute rejection of the new heart, which is the most important risk in organ transplants, while in Faucette's case they said the heart was beginning to show some initial signs of rejection./ CNA
