Study: Drinking water can raise blood pressure

A new study has found that an unexpected source of salt, drinking water, may be contributing to high blood pressure for millions of people around the world.

High blood pressure is usually linked to lifestyle factors such as salty foods, lack of physical activity and smoking. However, recent research shows that the salinity of drinking water may be an important and often overlooked factor.

According to an analysis of 27 international studies with over 74,000 participants, people who consume water with a higher sodium content tend to have higher blood pressure and a greater risk of hypertension. On average, systolic pressure is about 3.2 mmHg higher, while diastolic pressure is about 2.8 mmHg higher.

The researchers note that the risk of hypertension increases by about 26% in people exposed to saltier water. This effect is particularly pronounced in coastal areas, where seawater intrusion into freshwater sources is increasing due to climate change and rising sea levels.

Over 3 billion people live near coastal areas, where many communities rely on groundwater for their drinking water supply. In these areas, people may unknowingly consume significant amounts of salt through the water they drink and use for cooking.

Experts warn that even small increases in blood pressure at the population level can have major consequences for public health, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Currently, international guidelines do not set clear limits for sodium in drinking water, indicating the need for more research in this area.

Researchers recommend that citizens be informed about the water quality in their area and be careful about total salt intake in the diet, as water may be a hidden contributor to increased blood pressure./ CNA
