The former building of the Directorate of Prisons has been demolished by the Municipality of Tirana thanks to the works being carried out for the new National Theatre.

The action was carried out during the night hours, with the claim that heavy tonnage vehicles will pass through this space.

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who inspected the works for the New Theater yesterday evening, said that in this way all vehicles will pass through the Small Ring of Tirana, without damaging the area of ??Pedonale or the Castle, which is quite frequented by tourists who have filled the capital this summer as well.

"The National Theater is really a jewel for the city, but some decisions must be made that match the growth of tourism and the night life of the city. The whole area of ??the Castle, the area of ??the Pedestrian Street, has endless life, including the institutions that have access from the "Murat Toptani" pedestrian street. We have decided to have the access to the Theater site on the road of the Small Ring of Tirana. This means that we have decommissioned the building of the former Directorate of Prisons and with the opening of that construction site, and with the relocation of some electric cabins, we enable the Pedestrian Street, the Castle and the cinema to be used; so the whole "tourist vein" of Tirana should continue uninterrupted, while we will use this access here to make sure that the trucks that work mainly at night have entry and exit to the construction site", said Veliaj.

The Head of the Municipality thanked all structures of the municipality, but also of the Police, committed to the smooth running of the project, among the most important in the construction sites where work is currently being done in the capital.

"I want to thank everyone for their commitment, the IMT, all the colleagues who have mobilized, from the Municipal Police, the Traffic Police, the colleagues of the Fire Department. It is an operation that will take us all night, but tomorrow when Tirana wakes up in the morning, everyone will continue to use the Small Ring, but it was the only moment where we could make such an intervention. So, I want to thank all those who have been understanding for this temporary deviation during the evening", he said.

On the other hand, the mayor said that this is the month when the Municipality intensifies the work on the ground, helped mostly by the release of traffic in Tirana, so that when the citizens return from vacations, most of the works have been completed.

"August will be the busiest month for us. Since a large part of the citizens are by the sea, we will make sure to finish in the summer all these construction sites that require large road openings, such as the big construction site at Kinostudio, the construction site of the Theater and 10 new schools , which we are preparing to boil during August, so that when the citizens return from vacations, most of the works will be finished.
