The former speaker of the Assembly, Jozefina Topalli, as rarely before, has shown how she got involved in politics.

She confessed that she has always been part of the Democratic Party, but she had never thought about engaging in politics.

Topalli said during a television interview that she was first proposed to become a member of the Municipal Council and then a deputy, but she refused both positions.

The former speaker announced that she agreed to become a deputy after a long insistence by the democrats.

"I had finished my studies, I was working as a chancellor and I had started teaching at the University of Shkodra. My dream was to continue for specializations, to grow professionally in my field, etc. In '96 they told me that we thought about you becoming a member of the City Council, I smiled and said, thank you very much, I don't like politics, I don't want to deal with politics, I have other dreams and I thought I should recover all the time lost during previous years.

Then, they told me that we think you should become a deputy, represent your city. Of course it was an unequivocal first no. But then when he continued to insist, there came a moment when I said yes, not knowing where I was entering and where I was going. At that time I had my little son, it was one year and at that time I became a member of parliament in '96 and I remember that I was appointed chairperson of the laws committee. I was very surprised, how is it possible that without any experience in the parliament, I was appointed to become the chairperson of the laws committee.

Of course, I felt a very big responsibility, I didn't have much confidence in myself that I would manage it, I would be at the height so that others would not judge negatively, and I believe that that year was an excellent experience to understand how the essence works of the Parliament", underlined Jozefina Topalli./ CNA
