For more than a year, Albania has been boiling over the scandal of former FBI official Charles McGonigal and his connections with Albanian politicians.

All this time, Lulzim Basha has not dared to come out and talk about the McGonigal scandal in the media. Even when asked, his statements were brief, taking care to mention the former FBI official's name.

But this Sunday, Basha mentioned McGonigal in a podcast, where he played the role of the victim.

He said that Sali Berisha, in collaboration with Prime Minister Edi Rama, used this issue to attack him and damage his image as a reporter at the Council of Europe.

However, Luli stated that it was a few steps and the denunciations did not react negatively to him.

"I would like to say some things that I have not said before. A few months ago I was in Brussels, I was in the European People's Party, I met the highest official of this party, we discussed the situations and one of the things they told me with disgust, but also with a little humor that in the first place they had facts about the commitment of lobbyists with money against the official Democratic Party and against me personally, at least in two cases identified by them, where according to the opinion of one of them, in one of these two cases there was an underground collaboration between Berisha and Rama. Or for example in the Council of Europe, at the moment when the journey of the resolution for the confiscation of Russian assets began, there were alerts, anonymous letters clearly launched by current actors of the pulpit to attack the credibility of the reporter, citing the McGonigal case. And in this case it was not Edi Rama who did it. Afarmendsh should have been the first one interested, but it was his partner in crime. Of course, the Council of Europe has its own information, it has its own institutions, it has agencies and actors much longer than those who are well informed and aware of the facts and the truth think. And it is precisely this that has led to the proper functioning of American institutions precisely to discover this terribly corrupt act and to bring McGonigal to justice and behind bars. And sometimes I even laugh, because they thought they were steps in front of me, as they say 'opening the hole for me', while what you and others have told me, my calmness stems from the fact that I was kilometers before them in full communication with the relevant actors of American agencies and institutions, who at that moment were doing exactly what they had to do, were tracking and in the end quite successfully evidenced where the rabbit was sleeping at least as far as the part of their responsibility. Something that has not yet happened for our part of the responsibility, for the actors who, as I said, conceived and executed this shameful scene, a black spot in the relations we have with our strategic partners, in the case of McGonigal", emphasized Basha. / CNA
