Prime Minister Edi Rama gave an interview to the Italian media "La Republica" regarding the agreement with Italy for immigrants.

Rama said that he had discussed this issue months ago with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and when she came to Albania for vacation in August, they talked about immigrants again.

He declared that he could not refuse Italy, while he revealed that other countries have asked him for the same and he has not accepted.

"Giorgia had talked to me about this before the summer, then we talked on August 15, when she came to Albania. We had other requests, from different countries, but we could not say no to Italy", he said.

Asked about the expenses, the head of the government did not give a precise answer.

"Italy will take care of the creation and management of the centers: the structures still need to be built", he declared.

The journalist mentioned the strong reactions and criticism he received for this agreement and asked Rama about the compensation he will receive from Italy.

The Prime Minister emphasized that he is not helping Italy for business, since the neighboring country has helped Albania more than once.

"Unbelievable, everyone asks me that. But instead I think this should be looked at in a much simpler way. We do not do business. And we already have experience in hosting Afghan refugees.

Because when Italy needs us, we lend a hand and we are honored to do so. Because Italy showed us so much respect, gave us a big hand not once but many times, welcomed us with open arms when we escaped from hell.

Italy already invests a lot in Albania, but it can do much more. However, it is not for this reason that we have decided to help your country, but out of a pure and simple spirit of friendship. This is how friendships are nurtured and affirmed", Rama underlined./ CNA
