The draft law for the legalization of cannabis/tobacco: A step back in the commitments in the integration process

The deputy of Democratic Paris, Jorida Tabaku, has reacted to the approval of the law for the legalization of medical cannabis. Through a post on Facebook, she called it a step back in engagements in the integration process.

Tabaku writes that there should be a national strategy for the fight against drug trafficking and not a law to legalize it. She also emphasizes that 'when Europe is trying to integrate the region, the majority approves of an initiative that challenges the European project that Albanians love'.

The adoption of the law on the Legalization of Medical Cannabis when today Albania is ranked seventh in the world from the most mentioned countries for the origin, departure and transit of cannabis for the period 2016-2020, there are problems with border control, it is a transit country and a source of cannabis trafficking it is a clearly crossed red line. A step behind in the commitments in the integration process. No one was satisfied when Albania made news about drug planes, nor about the international traffic of cannabis, nor about the laundering of drug money! No one, even more so when this becomes a topic of debate in every parliament and when it is reflected in every report!

Therefore, a national strategy for the fight against drug trafficking should be made today, not a law to legalize it.

Even more so when the approved law comes without consultation with international partners, at a time when all energy, work and focus should be focused on positive reforms that advance legal changes in fulfillment of the obligations for membership and not in violation of them !

When Albanians are waiting for reforms that move the country forward, the government takes measures to send Albania to the black list once again. When Europe is trying to integrate the region, the majority approves of an initiative that challenges the European project that Albanians love.

A lot of energy has been spent to destroy, today every energy must be spent to build the European project here. Not with words but with concrete actions! /CNA.al
