The Albanian-born mayor of the Democratic Party in Pieve di Cadore (Belluno), Sindi Manushi, has spoken about the Albania-Italy agreement for immigrants.
She says that Italy would not ask such a thing from any country in the Western bloc.
"I don't think Italy would have ever allowed itself to ask something like that from any country in the Western bloc. Would he have ever had the courage to ask for a piece of land and sovereignty, for example, from Germany?"
She even states that Italy has shown itself arrogant as it would not have dared to do such a thing with another country.
"I don't know the details of the agreements, but basically the Italian state takes part of the sovereignty of a third and autonomous country and builds two structures that will be paid for and managed with expenses fully borne by Italy. Further, the immigrants that Albania cannot repatriate will return to Italy. So the more you travel, the more it costs. I have not yet understood the logic of this and I find it disgusting that Rama agreed to remove a part of his sovereignty over his territory". - said Manushi to the Italian newspaper "Corriere delle ALPS".
According to her, this agreement will not solve the problem of immigrants, but will only increase costs.
"What do I think as an Albanian and immigrant, the impression is negative, because from a practical point of view it will not solve anything. It is a palliative solution, a sensational move, but if and when they build the two structures in Albania, there will be no benefit for us here in Italy: immigrants will continue to come and we mayors will continue to be in difficulties. I don't know the details of the agreements, but basically the Italian state takes a part of the sovereignty of a third and autonomous country and builds two structures that will be paid for and managed with expenses fully borne by Italy. Further, the immigrants that Albania cannot repatriate will return to Italy. So, the more you travel, the more the costs add up," said Manushi.
Likewise, the mayor, who has a reception center for immigrants under the territory of her municipality, has raised doubts about Albania's coping capacity. -"Albania is not ready to welcome immigrants, nor do I know what that means, because it has no immigration experience. We Albanians have always been immigrants and we continue to be. The flow of Albanians fleeing Albania did not end in the 1990s, it is still today. We find ourselves in the paradox of welcoming migrants from a country that is not even able to." said the mayor. / CNA
