President Bajram Begaj issued the decree on the date of the parliamentary elections this Thursday.

Begaj has decided that the elections will be held on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

In an announcement, the presidency also explained the reasons for choosing this date. 

The presidency says that the reason for setting the date of May 11, 2025 as the date for holding these elections lies in the need expressed by the CEC to use all the time available for the preparation of the legal and organizational infrastructure, in order to make it possible the successful and effective voting of Albanians from abroad.

In addition, the announcement states that the 6th Summit of the European Political Committee (EPC) will not be held on May 8 and 9 in Tirana as planned, but will be postponed after the May 11 elections, in order not to influence the election campaign. .  

"The Democratic Party and a significant part of the parliamentary parties presented the concern to the President, that the planning of the 6th summit of the European Political Committee (EPC) for May 8 and 9, 2025, two days before the last possible date for conduct of the elections, forms an unacceptable influence and advantage for the government, as well as significantly violates the principle of equality of arms required by the Electoral Code for the election campaign.

Without questioning the permissibility or otherwise of such an activity, because this is the legal competence of the CEC, the President of the Republic joins in the position that the government's development of a meeting of this nature in the final of the election campaign, with the participation extraordinary European political leadership, cannot be without influence in setting the date of the elections.

For this reason, the President of the Republic, after making all the necessary verifications with the competent authorities of Albania, officially received assurances that the above activity will take place after the parliamentary elections, this fact confirmed for the President of the Republic by international interlocutors.

The official confirmation as above removes the reservation expressed by the Democratic Party and the rest of the parliamentary parties towards the date of May 11, 2025 and makes this date acceptable and agreeable to the entire political factor," Begaj emphasizes.

We remind you that this date was proposed by the SP and the CEC during the President's consultations with the political parties./ CNA
