Diella announces the Virtual Opposition
Today is a historic day! After so many years of stoic pati...

While I was watching a documentary on Blendi Fevziu's "Opinion" dedicated to Zai Fundo (Llazar Fundo 1899-1944), the most European communist of all those of his time and generation, I was reminded of one of the most interesting topics of conversation that we often discussed with Todi Lubonja (1923-2005), almost every time I had the chance to meet him.
And we met often. After he was released from exile with the fall of the communist system in Albania and for as long as I worked at the newspaper "Zëri i Popullit", he came almost every night. Always with Lirina, his wife, who never left him alone.
But even when Todi happened to come alone, Liria would know where to find him...
On many occasions, Todi would also be in the editorial office with Hamdi Sollaku, another former editor of the newspaper and a man of distinction for his nobility, and Andon Kuqali, the brother of the LANÇ martyr Gjikë Kuqali, whom Todi affectionately called Ndonkë. More than Gjikë, with whom Todi had been a war comrade, he would talk about their father, the patriot Kolë Kuqali, who died from torture in the communist inquisition in 1947, and also about the paradox of the fact that his other two sons died from torture in the Nazi camps in Mauthausen and Prishtina!
Occasionally, Dritëroi would come, and on these occasions the conversations would take on a different vibrancy, a different color.
Todi would come because of the kindness and respect with which all of us at the newspaper awaited him, starting with the editor-in-chief Thoma Gëllçi, who would often address him as "come on, editor-in-chief, and run the newspaper for us," and up to Kiço Bukaçi, the newspaper's stenographer, who had done the same job when Todi had been editor-in-chief.
Todi was one of the editors-in-chief of the newspaper. He directed it during the sixties of the last century. He is remembered for his innovative and courageous ideas, for his modern conception of the role of the newspaper, which, in addition to being valued as a means of propaganda, he also considered as an institution of culture, as a school, where professionalism should be primary.
But, Todi Lubonja was also among the editors-in-chief of the most important newspaper in Albania during the communist era, who suffered the imprisonments of the government to which he was dedicated with idealism.
His expression in the courtroom has remained famous. As the presiding judge announced the verdict of a 15-year prison sentence, Todi Lubonja responded: “Long live scientific socialism!”
I first saw Todi Lubonja in Torovicë, Lezha, in the spring of 1989. He was interned there after being released from prison, while I was there to write a report on the work of the cooperative.
Ma treguan me gisht.
Ndër ta veçonte me simpati Zai Fundon.
While, for example, the socialist mayor of Kruja had the courage to place in the city he leads the bust of a quisling and fascist prime minister, why wouldn't the socialist prime minister of Albania have the courage to place the bust of an anti-fascist and European communist from Korça like Zai Fundo in the flowerbed in front of the Socialist Party headquarters?
The 35th anniversary of the founding of the Albanian Socialist Party, which will certainly be celebrated in June next year, should be preceded by such activities.
Zai Fundo is not only a great name, undervalued as he deserves in the history of Albania. A contemporary and collaborator with Fan Noli, Luigj Gurakuqi, Halim Xhelo, Hasan Prishtina, Tajar Zavalani, but also a friend of Gjergj Dimitrov, with whom he became world famous in the Leipzig trial accused by Hitler of the burning of the Reichstag, Zai Fundo would also manage to escape Stalin's revenge.
Italians are proud and sing songs that they have had "Un partigiano come presidente" (a partisan as president) at the head of their state. Meanwhile, Albanians should know that the partisan president of Italy, Sandro Pertini, was a prison, war, and idealistic comrade with Zai Fundo.
Exiled to the island of Ventotene as an anti-fascist, he would join forces with Italian ideologues Altiero Spinelli, Ernesto Rossi and Eugenio Colorni, with whom he would draft the "Ventotene Manifesto", known as the precursor to the Hague Congress and the Schuman Declaration from which the United Europe was born.
Zai Fundi is the face of an era. Honoring him is honoring Albanian anti-fascism, it is honoring Albania's European history.
