Epstein scandal/ Masimo Theater cancels "Aida", conductor Chaslin

The Jeffrey Epstein scandal has reached Palermo and is also affecting the world of classical music. The Teatro Massimo has decided to end its collaboration with French conductor Frédéric Chaslin, who was scheduled to conduct "Aida" next May.

This decision was made after his name appeared in Epstein's files. As "La Repubblica" reports, the affair dates back to last February, when Chaslin arrived in Palermo to conduct a concert dedicated to Beethoven.

Shortly before his arrival, news broke of a contact he had made in 2013. The maestro had suggested to Epstein the name of an acquaintance as a translator for a visit to the Paris Opera and Versailles. The appointment never materialized, but it was enough to generate resentment.

Rumors and concerns began to circulate within the theater, especially among the musicians. The director himself, sensing the tense atmosphere, had tried to address the issue openly during rehearsals, but no direct questions were asked.

Although the orchestra had previously shown great appreciation for Chaslin, even considering him a permanent music director, the climate quickly changed. The concern, which also surfaced in union talks, was brought to the attention of the artistic director.

After an internal discussion, the orchestra members clearly expressed the difficulty of conducting a complex opera like "Aida" in a context perceived as unstable. In the absence of a formal contract, supervisor Marco Betta informed the maestro that collaboration was impossible.

Chaslin did not passively accept the exclusion and decided to make his correspondence with the theater public. Through his lawyer, he reiterated that he had never been the subject of any investigation or complaint, emphasizing that his relationship with Epstein was limited to a hypothesis of patronage, without receiving any compensation./ CNA
