Robbie Robertson, the guitarist and songwriter of the Canadian-American band The Band, has died at the age of 80.
The news was announced by his manager who said that Robertson passed away after a long battle with the disease.
The Band were a musical group that rose to prominence in the late 1960s.
Robertson was the co-writer of some of the most popular songs, including "The Weight" and "The Night" "They Drove Old" "Dixie Down".
The Band released a number of acclaimed albums throughout the 1970s and, after playing their last show as a full group in 1976, reunited without Robertson for a number of tours and studio releases throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Along with keyboardist Garth Hudson, Robertson was one of two surviving members of The Band's classic line-up.
After The Last Waltz, he collaborated with Scorsese on the soundtracks of some of the director's most popular films, including the 1980 classic Raging Bull and 2019's The Irishman. / CNA
