Thousands of devotees flocked to the Himalayan town of Dharamshala in India this Sunday to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, who has lived in exile since fleeing Chinese authority in Tibet in 1959.

 "When I look back on my life, I see that I have not lost it at all. I live my life in service to other sentient beings," said the Dalai Lama.

Dressed in traditional robes and a long yellow veil, the Dalai Lama was escorted into the temple courtyard by a group of monks, while Tibetan artists beat drums and played bagpipes.

Known worldwide for his red robes and broad smile, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, describes himself as a “simple Buddhist monk.” But millions of Tibetan Buddhists worship him as the living manifestation of Chenrezig, the Buddhist god of compassion.

The birthday party culminated a week of celebrations, during which the Nobel Peace Prize winner said he plans to be resurrected after his death, ending years of speculation that he could be the last person to hold the position.
