NASA Discovery: A Huge Underground Reservoir on Mars

There is a possibility that a large reservoir of water is located deep below the surface of Mars within igneous rocks. 

This large reservoir of water could fill an ocean that would cover the surface of the entire planet, scientists concluded based on data obtained by NASA's InSight robotic ship during the mission that explored the interior of Mars. 

The water, located about 11.5 to 20 kilometers below the Martian surface, potentially provides favorable conditions for sustaining microbial life, either in the past or now, the researchers said, according to Reuters.

"At these depths, the crust is warm enough for water to exist as liquid. At shallower depths, water would freeze, like ice," said the University of California scientist and lead author of the study published Monday in the journal " Proceedings". 

The InSight robotic spacecraft landed on Mars in 2018 to study the planet's interior, collecting data on the planet's various layers. The mission ended in 2022.

The surface of Mars is cold and barren today, but it was once warm and wet. The study suggests that most of the water that was on the surface of Mars entered the planet's interior.

Geological research has shown that there were lakes, rivers and oceans on the surface of the planet more than three billion years ago./ CNA
