Study: Single women are happier than single men

Stereotypically, women are the ones who want a romantic partner and want to get married or have children and start a family. Based on this way of thinking, being alone should be more of a problem for women than for men.

In contrast, men are supposed to be able to find satisfaction in their work and activities and are usually not the ones fantasizing about their wedding day or dreaming of finding the perfect partner.

But is all this true? Are single women really less satisfied than single men and do they really desire a romantic partner more than single men?

In a paper recently published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, "Sisters are doing it for themselves: Gender differences in the well-being of singles," University of Toronto psychologists Elaine Hoan and Geoff MacDonald attempted to answer the above questions.

Researchers analyzed data from nearly 6,000 single men who participated in 10 studies. There were almost equal numbers of men and women and 29 non-binary people. Singles were at least 18 years old (median age was 32) and not in a romantic relationship during the study.

Women were happier than men with their single lives

In every question asked in the study, single women were more comfortable than single men with their single lives. They were happier with their current romantic relationship status, weren't actively looking for a partner, and were more sexually satisfied—generally more satisfied with their lives.

But are women generally more satisfied than men, even if they are in a romantic relationship? When it comes to overall life satisfaction and sexual satisfaction, the answer is yes: Women with a partner were more satisfied than men with a partner. However, they were no more satisfied with their personal lives compared to men in a relationship.

Where single women really differed from men and single women in relationships was their satisfaction with their personal life situation. As it turns out, singleness on average suits single women. They like each other and are not particularly interested in getting into a relationship.
