"The sun doesn't set for weeks"/ Where is the "timeless

In northern Norway, above the Arctic Circle, lies the island of Sommaroy, a small fishing community that became world famous for its unusual idea of ??living "without time."

In this extreme zone, the sun does not set for weeks during the summer (from mid-May to the end of July), while in the winter it disappears completely for months. These conditions have created a unique way of life, where the boundaries between day and night often lose their traditional meaning.

In 2019, the residents of Sommaroy symbolically proposed declaring the village a “timeless zone,” where people would not be forced to follow fixed schedules for daily activities like work, shopping, or socializing. The idea quickly went viral and attracted international media attention.

However, the reality of life on the island is more complex. Although residents talk about a freer relationship with time and nature, in practice businesses and daily activities continue to operate on set schedules, while phones and modern devices still tell the time.

Researchers point out that people fall into two categories, those who live by the clock (clock-timers) and those who act on events and feelings (event-timers). Sommaroy seems to mix both lifestyles.

Although the “timeless” project was criticized as partly supported by the tourism campaign, it remains a symbol of the modern desire to break away from the fast pace and pressure of the daily schedule.

In the end, the island is not truly "timeless," but it offers a rare experience where people can rethink their relationship with time and the way they organize their lives. /CNA
