Tried to open emergency door on flight/ Albanian in US sentenced to 18 months in

A 24-year-old Albanian, Mario Nikprelaj, a resident of Shelby Township, Michigan, has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and two years of supervised release after a dangerous flight incident, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Iowa announced.

The incident occurred on July 17, 2025, aboard Delta Connection Flight 3612 operated by SkyWest Airlines, from Omaha, Nebraska, to Detroit, Michigan. Before the plane took off, Nikprelaj became unruly, refusing to wear a seatbelt and making inappropriate comments to the crew, the New York Post reported.

The situation escalated when some passengers panicked, thinking he was trying to open the emergency door. The pilot forced the flight to make an emergency landing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the safety of everyone on board.

After landing, Nikprelaj was arrested by local police, and during the search, 41 Xanax pills were found that were not in his name.

The young man has pleaded guilty to interfering with the work of the crew and dangerous conduct and has a previous history of problems with the law, including charges of assault, domestic violence and other offenses.
