European operation against cybercrime/ 4 people were arrested

Four people have been arrested in Ukraine and Armenia and more than 100 internet servers have been taken out of service or disrupted in a major operation targeting international cybercrime that has affected thousands of people, Europol said on May 30.

The operation was carried out between May 27 and May 29. The European Union's law enforcement agency said this was "the largest operation against 'botnets', which have played a major role in deploying 'ransomware'", or malicious software that encrypts data.

Meanwhile, the term 'botnet' is used to refer to an interconnected network of computers that hackers use to spread viruses.

This operation against cybercrime was initiated and led by France, Germany and the Netherlands. The operation involved several other countries, including the United States, Britain and Ukraine, Europol said in a statement.

This operation, according to Germany's interior minister, Nancy Faeser, was the "most significant blow" to date against cybercrime.

During the operation, the authorities destroyed the networks through which cyber attacks were carried out around the world. Thousands of people were victims of this cybercrime.

One of the main suspects, according to authorities, had benefited from at least 69 million euros in cryptocurrencies, enabling the use of criminal internet infrastructure to carry out cyber attacks.

Europol said one of the suspects was arrested in Armenia and three others in Ukraine, adding that more than 2,000 domains are now under the agency's control.
