Details from the arrest of Lul Berisha/ The former head of the Durrës gang

The first details have come to light from the arrest in Spain of the former leader of the Durrës gang, Lulzim Berisha.

It is learned that Lul Berisha, considered a person of high social risk, was hiding in Spain with Bulgarian papers. 

But information from police intelligence sources helped locate the 52-year-old.

The Albanian authorities have exchanged information with the Spanish authorities and the latter have organized an operation, which was carried out successfully.

The procedures for the extradition of the former leader of the Durrës Gang to Albania will now begin.

Berisha was arrested in 2006 for the criminal activity of the Durrës gang committed in the years 1998-2000.

Charges were brought against him for the criminal offenses of "premeditated murder" committed within the framework of the "Structured Criminal Group" and "Illegal Possession of Firearms". 16 members of this gang were sentenced to a total of 245 years in prison by the former Serious Crimes Court.

Initially, Lul Berisha was sentenced to life imprisonment, but in 2014, the Supreme Court issued a final decision that reduced his sentence and forced him to serve only 25 years in prison.

In December 2016, he was released from prison on bail by the Court of First Instance in Durrës with the claims of health reasons.

In 2020, Lulzim Berisha was declared wanted for the two murders committed in 2005 against Vajdin Lame and Klodian Saliu, which were revealed 15 years later.

In the same year, the Supreme Court overturned the decision to release him on bail.

Later, in January 2022, the Durrës Prosecutor's Office requested the arrest of Lul Berisha for the outstanding sentence./ CNA
