19 Russian soldiers are killed in Donetsk

At least 19 Russian soldiers were killed and dozens wounded Thursday by a Ukrainian missile attack in the Ukrainian region of Donetsk, Ukrainian officials said.

Ukraine's General Staff said 19 Russian soldiers were killed and 12 others wounded when a group of Russian soldiers were attacked by a rocket in the town of Olenivka, in the Russian-held part of the Donetsk region.

Among the dead was a deputy commander of a Russian army unit, while the unit's commander was among the wounded, according to the Ukrainian Headquarters.

The statement of the General Staff of Ukraine has not been confirmed by the Russian army.

On February 21, an investigation by Mediazona and the BBC Russian Service found that at least 45,123 Russian soldiers have been killed since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago.

In January, CIA Director William Burns said in an article published in Foreign Affairs magazine that at least 315,000 Russian soldiers have been injured or killed during the war in Ukraine.

Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. On February 25, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the invasion began. This was the first time that Ukraine officially spoke about the total number of soldiers killed.

The Ukrainian president claimed that Russia's losses in this war were 180,000 soldiers killed and 500,000 wounded, claims that could not be independently confirmed.

The Ministry of Defense of Russia does not disclose data on the losses of soldiers and does not comment on the figures reported by journalists./ REL
