What is the balance of victims from the Hamas-Israel war?

More than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war between Israel and Hamas - the US and EU-designated terrorist group - began five months ago, health officials in the territory said.

The rise in the death toll came after witnesses said Israeli troops opened fire on a crowd of people waiting to receive humanitarian aid in Gaza City, killing hundreds and wounding many more, the Associated Press reports.

At least 104 people were killed in the crowd where Palestinians lined up to receive aid, Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashra fal-Qidra said. About 760 were injured, he said.

That war has forced 80 percent of Gaza's population of 2.3 million to flee their homes, while UN officials say a quarter of the population is starving.

Gaza's health ministry - which said on Thursday that the total number of Palestinians killed in the war in the territory had reached 30,035, while another 70,457 were wounded - did not distinguish between combatants and non-combatants in its calculations.

Israel says it has killed 10,000 members of Hamas, without providing any evidence.

Israel's air, sea and land offensive, launched in response to Hamas' October 7 attack on Israel, has wreaked havoc on Gaza City, cutting it off from the rest of the territory for months, causing many little help to get inside it.

The war has caused a major humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and fueled global concern over the situation in Rafah, the southern Gaza city along the border with Egypt, where 1.4 million Palestinians have sought refuge from daily Israeli bombardment.

The war began after Hamas members swept into southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 250 hostages./ REL
