Verdict: Former President Trump's name on Illinois ballots

The Illinois State Board of Elections decided on Tuesday to keep Mr. Trump's name on the ballot, a week before the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on whether his role in the Jan. 6 riots during the Capitol attack disqualifies him from the presidency.

The board's decision comes after an expert appointed by the board, a former Republican judge, concluded that there was "sufficient evidence" to show that Mr. Trump is unfit to be president because he violated a clause in the constitution under in which those who are "involved in rebellion" are prohibited from exercising public functions. But the expert recommended that the board leave the decision on this matter to the courts.

And it will come as the Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments next week in Mr Trump's appeal of the Colorado ruling that ordered his name removed from that state's primary ballot.

The nation's highest court has never ruled on a case involving the third section of the 14th Amendment, enacted in 1868 to prevent former Confederates from returning to power after the Civil War. but which has rarely been used since.

Some legal experts say that point is valid in Mr. Trump's case because of his role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election and inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol after he lost the election to Democratic President Joe Biden.

More than ten similar cases are being heard across the country, but only the Colorado case made it to court.

Even in Maine, the democratic secretary of that state has made a decision against Mr. Trump, but her decision has been suspended until the decision of the Supreme Court./ VOA
