Russian troops withdraw from Kherson, Ukrainian soldiers are greeted with cheers by the residents

Ukrainian troops were greeted on Friday by jubilant residents in central Kherson after Russia abandoned the only regional capital it had seized since launching aggression against the neighboring country in February.

A video obtained by Reuters showed people cheering and saluting Ukrainian soldiers in Freedom Square. Russia said it had withdrawn from the strategic city on Friday without losing a single soldier, while Kiev described a chaotic exodus of Russian soldiers who abandoned their uniforms and some drowned as they tried to flee.

As Ukrainian forces advanced rapidly, forcing one of the fastest and most humiliating retreats of Russian forces, local residents emerged from places where they had been hiding for months to reveal that Russian troops had killed residents and looted homes.
